How to determine the correct chainsaw chain size

    chain sizes, one finder

    We are a chain and guide bar maker. Our plate steel comes from Germany, every rivet is heat treated and quenched, and every cutter is cold-headed, ground and chrome plated before the loop is oiled and carded. Loggers and weekend woodcutters ask the same thing of a chain: that it fits the first time and stays sharp. That is the whole job.

    How to read a chain size

    3/8" LP · .050" · 56DL

    1. 3/8" LPPitch

      Half the distance across three rivets. It must match the drive sprocket and the bar nose.

    2. .050"Gauge

      Thickness of the drive link that rides in the bar groove. Match it exactly.

    3. 56DLDrive links

      The count of teeth that run in the groove. It sets the loop length.

    Bar length is missing from that line on purpose. It helps you narrow the list, and then the three numbers decide it.

    A safe replacement checklist

    • Pull the spark plug boot or the battery before touching the chain.
    • Read pitch and gauge off the stamp near the bar's mounting end.
    • Count drive links on the old loop, or find the number on its card.
    • Match all three numbers. Bar length only narrows the search.
    • Fit the new loop with the cutters facing forward on top of the bar.
    • Tension until the chain snaps back to the rail, then recheck after the first few cuts.

    From pole pruning to firewood

    Our chainsaw chain range runs from a 4-inch, 28-link loop for the Stihl GTA 26 pruner to a 36-inch, 114-link ripping chain for a chainsaw mill. Between them sit the sizes that matter most: 3/8" low-profile chain for battery and homeowner saws, .325" chain for mid-size gas saws, full 3/8" chain for big bars, and skip-tooth chain for 20- to 28-inch bars.

    Replacement chain that fits the first time

    A replacement chainsaw chain has to match three numbers: pitch, gauge and drive-link count. The bar length narrows the search but does not settle it. Every KAKEI chain page lists all three, our part number, the cross-reference chain codes it replaces and the saws it is made for.

    Semi-chisel, full chisel, skip tooth

    Semi-chisel chain has rounded working corners that stay sharp in dirty or frozen wood and forgive a less experienced hand. Full-chisel chain has square corners that cut faster in clean wood. Skip-tooth chain spaces the cutters out for long bars. Ripping chain is ground for cutting along the grain.

    Three to a pack, and why

    A dull chain makes dust instead of chips, pulls to one side and works the saw harder. Most of our sizes come three to a pack so a fresh loop is always on the bench while the dull one waits for the file.
